Nepal and France established diplomatic relations on April 20, 1949, making France the 4th country to establish bilateral ties with Nepal. The two countries opened embassies in each other’s capitals in June 1967.
Nepal and France launched their bilateral economic cooperation program in February 1981 with the signing of the First Protocol, which provided a 50 million French Franc loan to Nepal. At present, the French assistance to Nepal is primarily channelled through the European Union and the United Nations.
Nepal and France signed a Memorandum of Understanding on December 13, 2019, establishing the Bilateral Consultation Mechanism (BCM) between their foreign ministries. The BCM facilitates discussions on bilateral relations, cooperation, and regional and global issues of mutual concern.
Nepal and France have enjoyed cordial friendship and cooperation, and have explored increased collaboration, particularly in areas such as trade, cultural exchange, and development.
