Cardamom Worth Rs 7.67 Billion Exported From Kakadbhitta Customs Point

Jhapa:  A total of over 4.29 million kilograms of cardamom worth Rs 7.67 billion was exported through the Kakadbhitta customs point in Jhapa district during the fiscal year 2024/25, according to the customs office. This made cardamom the highest-earning export item from this customs point for the year.

Cardamom, a high-value crop, is mainly produced in the eastern hill districts of Ilam, Panchthar, Taplejung, Tehrathum, Dhankuta, Sankhuwasabha, and Bhojpur in Koshi Province. After processing, it is primarily exported to India via Kakadbhitta.

According to Ishwar Kumar Humagain, Information Officer at Kakadbhitta Customs Office, other major exports from the region include iron plates, tea, plywood, and Chhuri (a type of traditional knife). Iron plate exports were valued at Rs 4.42 billion, while tea exports reached Rs 4.21 billion.

Humagain said that tea exports rose by 32.5 percent compared to the previous fiscal year, showing growing demand. Tea, cardamom, and ginger remain the key cash crops of the hilly districts in Koshi Province.

Plywood also emerged as one of the top export items, with exports worth Rs 3.32 billion during the same period.
