Kathmandu: The U.S. Embassy has handed over advanced DNA and drug testing technology to the Nepal Police Central Forensic Science Lab to strengthen Nepal’s forensic science capacity.
Through its Office of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Justice, the Embassy provided a Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) and a Radian ASAP drug testing machine. These tools will speed up crime-solving, enhance drug detection, assist in identifying missing persons, and reinforce the rule of law.
Speaking at the handover, Ambassador Dean R. Thompson reaffirmed U.S. support for Nepal’s justice system, emphasizing the shared commitment to human rights, security, and law enforcement.
This initiative is also linked to broader U.S. efforts to combat the global spread of fentanyl and disrupt synthetic opioid supply chains. Officials noted that with these technologies, Nepal is better prepared to contribute to regional and bilateral cooperation in safeguarding communities in South Asia and the United States.
