Kathmandu: The International Day Against Nuclear Tests is being observed today, August 29.
On 2 December 2009, the 64th session of the United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted resolution 64/35, declaring 29 August as the International Day Against Nuclear Tests. The resolution calls for raising awareness about the devastating effects of nuclear weapon test explosions and underscores the urgent need for their cessation to achieve the goal of a nuclear-weapon-free world.
Since 2010, the day has been marked globally with a variety of activities, including symposia, conferences, exhibitions, competitions, publications, lectures, and media campaigns, uniting the global community toward the elimination of nuclear weapons.
In a message on the occasion, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres reminded the world of the grim legacy of over 2,000 nuclear tests carried out in the past. Marking the 80th anniversary of the first nuclear test, he urged nations to renew their commitment to a world free of nuclear weapons and vowed that such destructive practices must never be repeated.
