NTB Issues Travel Advisory After Flash Flood Washes Away Friendship Bridge at Nepal-China Border

The NTB has urged travellers to avoid the Rasuwa/Kerung route until further notice and to stay informed through official updates.

Kathmandu: The Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) has issued a travel advisory following a flash flood that caused severe destruction at the Rasuwa-Kerung border.

The Friendship Bridge connecting Nepal and China was washed away after heavy rainfall in the Tibet region triggered a surge in the Bhote Koshi River. At least 18 people are reported missing on the Nepali side, while China’s Xinhua news agency reported 11 people missing across the border.

The flooding, caused by the Lende River in Gyirong County, Tibet, has resulted in significant damage to infrastructure. The advisory mentions that the Nepal Army is actively engaged in rescue operations, using helicopters to evacuate stranded individuals.

Travellers stuck at the border or in Tibet are being rerouted through the Hilsa-Simikot corridor, and talks are underway to temporarily open the Korala (Upper Mustang) and Kodari (Sindhupalchowk) crossings to facilitate movement and assistance.

The NTB has urged travellers to avoid the Rasuwa/Kerung route until further notice and to stay informed through official updates.

With the monsoon season in full swing, sudden rains, landslides, and travel disruptions are expected. Travellers are encouraged to stay cautious, plan wisely, and check weather conditions regularly using reliable sources. While international flights continue to operate normally, domestic flights may experience delays or cancellations due to weather conditions.
