Nepal and Germany established diplomatic ties on April 4, 1958, making it the 11th country to establish bilateral ties with Nepal. The countries established residential embassies in each other’s capitals on July 5, 1965.

At the multilateral level, Nepal and Germany are both members of the United Nations. Germany has been one of Nepal’s key development partners since 1961. It also supports Nepal’s development through international organizations like the European Union and the World Bank. The German government is helping Nepal to graduate from its Least Developed Country status. Nepal and Germany signed a joint declaration of Intent for the Bilateral Consultation Mechanism (BCM) on July 16, 2019, facilitating discussions on bilateral relations, cooperation, and shared concerns.

Nepal and Germany share cordial relations. Around 1,500 Nepali students attend German Universities annually. Germany’s continued support to Nepal’s peace process, economic development, and sustainable energy efforts presents numerous growth opportunities for Nepal.
