Kathmandu: Millennium Challenge Account Nepal (MCA-Nepal) has signed two major contracts under the MCC Compact’s Electricity Transmission Project, jointly funded by the governments of Nepal and the United States.
The agreements, worth approximately $154.5 million, were signed with Angelique-Skipper JV and WAIBA-SALASAR JV for the design, installation, testing, and commissioning of 180 kilometers of transmission lines. These lines will connect Ratmate to New Damauli and New Damauli to New Butwal, forming part of a planned 297-kilometer network.
The contract signing was attended by MCC Acting Deputy Vice President for Compact Operations John Wingle, U.S. Embassy Nepal’s Chargé d’Affaires Jason Meeks, MCA-Nepal Executive Director Khadga Bisht, MCC Resident Country Director Diane Francisco, and Ministry of Finance Secretary Ghanashyam Upadhyaya.
Wingle praised the milestone, noting that the new transmission lines are vital for ensuring efficient electricity flow across Nepal, reducing costs for households, industries, and enterprises, and boosting economic growth domestically and regionally.
Chargé d’Affaires Meeks highlighted the project as “a tangible symbol of the United States’ enduring commitment to Nepal’s growth and prosperity,” adding that the MCC Compact is a cornerstone of U.S.–Nepal cooperation aimed at long-term development and benefits for all citizens.
