80th UN Day: CoAS General Sigdel Praises the Role of Nepali Peacekeepers in Various UN Peacekeeping Missions Across the World

Kathmandu: The 80th United Nations Day (UN Day-2025) was celebrated on November 6 at the Shree Birendra Peace Operations Training Centre in Panchkhal. On the occasion, Chief of Army Staff (CoAS) General Ashok Raj Sigdel praised the role of Nepali peacekeepers in various UN peacekeeping missions across the world since 1958. He stated that the Nepali Army remains committed to contributing to global peace, even under difficult and volatile circumstances, including the current financial constraints facing the UN.


The program was attended by the Secretary of Defense, representatives from Nepal Police, Armed Police Force Nepal, and the National Investigation Department, local elected representatives, officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, military attachés of friendly nations, media personnel, and officers and personnel of the Nepali Army.
Nepal, which began deploying peacekeepers in 1958 at the request of the United Nations, is currently ranked first among troop-contributing countries and is also a leading contributor of women peacekeepers. At present, 5,819 Nepali Army personnel are serving in 10 UN missions worldwide. To date, 74 Nepali soldiers have sacrificed their lives and 75 have been injured in the line of duty while working to uphold global peace.
