French Embassy in Nepal Marks International Day of Women in Sports, Honours Nepali Achievers

Kathmandu: The Embassy of France in Nepal marked the International Day of Women in Sports by honouring Nepali women who have recently excelled in sports and mountaineering, recognizing their outstanding contributions and achievements.

At the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, taekwondo athlete Palesha Goverdhan brought pride to Nepal by winning a bronze medal, the country’s first-ever medal at the Paralympic Games.

Similarly, in 2025, while commemorating the 75th anniversary of the first ascent of Annapurna, the French Embassy honoured the first Nepali women to summit the peak in 2021. The climbers included Purnima Shrestha, Dawa Yangzum Sherpa, Dabhuti Sherpa, Pasang Lhamu Sherpa, Sharmila Tamang, and Maya Sherpa.

Virginie Corteval, French Ambassador to Nepal, honoured those Nepali women at the program. The event highlighted the growing role of women in sports and mountaineering, and the importance of promoting gender equality and inclusion in all fields of achievement.

On the occasion, the French Embassy saluted the honourees for their dedication and resilience, and extended best wishes for their continued success, while calling for greater recognition and opportunities for women in sports around the world.
