Kathmandu: Balendra Shah, popularly known as Balen, has been appointed the 43rd Prime Minister of Nepal by President Ramchandra Paudel. He assumes office as the leader of the parliamentary party of the Rastriya Swatantra Party under Article 76(1) of the Constitution.
The oath of office and secrecy is set to be administered shortly by President Paudel. Shah secured his position after winning the House of Representatives election from Jhapa Constituency No. 5, defeating KP Sharma Oli by a significant margin.
Born on April 27, 1990, in Kathmandu, Shah comes from a family background in medicine. He holds an MTech in Structural Engineering and a degree in Civil Engineering from Purbanchal University.
Before becoming Prime Minister, Shah served as the Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City after being elected in 2022. During his tenure, he focused on urban governance, heritage conservation, infrastructure development, and improving public services. He also played a role in post-earthquake reconstruction efforts and urban management reforms.
In addition to politics, Shah is widely recognized as a rap artist whose music often addresses corruption, governance, and youth issues. His leadership is seen as representing the aspirations of a new generation seeking change and development in Nepal.
