Kathmandu: The Embassy of Bangladesh in Kathmandu inaugurated the Bangladesh Fish Festival 2025, celebrating the nation’s vibrant riverine culture, rich fisheries heritage, and world-famous culinary traditions.
Bangladesh, home to the world’s largest river delta formed by the Ganges, Brahmaputra, and Meghna rivers, boasts a dense network of over a thousand rivers and canals. This unique geography has nurtured an abundant variety of freshwater and marine fish, making fish an integral part of Bangladeshi identity, cuisine, and economy.
The festival highlights the exceptional diversity of Bangladeshi fish from the delicate and aromatic Hilsa, the pride of Bengali cuisine, to Rui, Katla, Vetki (Koral), and a wide selection of sea fish including lobster, tiger prawn, and Red Snapper. This culinary richness stems from the fertile river systems and coastal waters of Bangladesh, which have supported centuries-old fishing and cooking traditions reflected in the timeless proverb (Bengalis live on fish and rice).
Bangladesh is a global leader in fisheries, ranking 2nd in freshwater fish production, 5th in aquaculture, 14th in marine fish production, and 8th in crustacean farming. The festival aims to showcase this success while offering an authentic taste of Bangladeshi flavors to the Himalayan community.
The Embassy emphasized that the festival seeks not only to promote Bangladesh’s culinary treasures but also to strengthen cultural ties, enhance collaboration in the fisheries sector, and share the warmth of Bangladeshi hospitality.
Visitors are invited to explore, taste, and experience the diverse and vibrant flavors that define Bangladesh’s riverine and maritime identity.
