Kathmandu: A Chinese-assisted rice planting program has been launched at the Agriculture and Forestry University (AFU), Rampur, featuring 37 varieties of variegated rice developed by the Chongqing Institute of Agricultural Sciences, China. The trial planting was attended by Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Chen Song, alongside officials from Bharatpur Metropolitan City and AFU.
In addition to the Chinese varieties, one Nepali-developed variety and eight other commonly used rice varieties were planted. For each type, 300 grams of seeds were sown on the university premises.
Speaking at a ceremony before the planting, Bharatpur Metropolitan City Mayor Renu Dahal said the initiative stemmed from agreements made during former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal’s visit to China. She expressed confidence that the project would become a milestone for Bharatpur and for Nepal’s agriculture sector, noting that Chitwan and Jhapa are already leading rice-producing districts. She added that expanding high-yield varieties such as the Varnashankar type could significantly boost production nationwide.
Ambassador Song described the launch as a matter of pride for China, presenting the seeds as a symbolic gift marking 70 years of bilateral achievements. He expressed belief that the trial would help realize Nepal’s agricultural ambitions and enhance rice production in the coming years.
AFU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Sharada Thapaliya credited the project’s implementation to support from the Chinese government, Bharatpur Metropolitan City, and various experts and organizations. He said a successful trial could have a transformative impact on Nepal’s rice production.
Project Area Coordinator Raju Baral noted that the most promising Chinese varieties identified in the trial could be cultivated in different parts of Nepal. The program also includes farmer training. AFU will evaluate the results and recommend suitable varieties, potentially combining popular Nepali and Chinese strains.
Currently, Nepal has only one locally produced variegated rice seed, Hardinath Hybrid One, while other varieties are imported.
