Kathmandu: Nepali environmental scientist Dr. Uttam Babu Shrestha has been chosen as a coordinating lead author for the second global report of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES).
Dr. Shrestha was selected by the IPBES multidisciplinary expert group to lead Chapter Two of the report from among applications received worldwide.
Established in 2012, IPBES is an intergovernmental body that provides scientific knowledge on biodiversity and ecosystem services, functioning in a similar way to the IPCC on climate change. Its reports form the basis for global biodiversity strategies. In 2020, IPBES was even nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
The second global report is expected to be completed in 2028 and will help guide biodiversity conservation strategies beyond 2030.
Dr. Shrestha previously served as a fellow and lead author on IPBES’s first global assessment report and as a lead author on its sustainable resource use report.
