ECOSOC President Thapa Addresses 60th Human Rights Council Session in Geneva

Kathmandu: President of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the 2025–2026 session, Lok Bahadur Thapa, addressed the 60th Regular Session of the Human Rights Council (HRC60) in Geneva on 18 September 2025.

“At the onset, I take this opportunity to affirm the importance of deepening collaboration between the Economic and Social Council and the Human Rights Council for advancing inclusive development and human dignity,” said President Thapa in his remarks.

As ECOSOC marks its 80th anniversary, Thapa emphasised the need to recommit to ensuring that development and human dignity remain at the heart of multilateral action.

“I count on this council to ensure that the human rights dimension remains central so that development cooperation is not only more effective but also just,” added President Thapa.

Moreover, referring to Resolution 27/25, Thapa further noted that the dialogue between ECOSOC and the Human Rights Council serves as a bridge between Geneva and New York, urging members to utilise this mechanism fully.

The 60th regular session of the Human Rights Council is currently taking place from 8 September to 8 October 2025 in Geneva, Switzerland.
