Kathmandu: ECOSOC President Lok Bahadur Thapa participated in the CSW70 side event on “Women at the Heart of Africa’s Food Security Transformation.”
He stressed that in sub-Saharan Africa, women make up nearly half of the agrifood systems workforce, contributing across the entire value chain – from production and processing to distribution, consumption, and packaging.
He added that despite their indispensable role, women continue to face systemic barriers. To better support and elevate their contributions, he says that there must be an adoption of gender-responsive policy frameworks that promote women’s leadership, strengthen governance, and encourage innovation in the agrifood sector. He also underscored the need to support them with finance, technology and social protection, and deeper partnerships.
