Kathmandu: The Embassy of Canada to Nepal, in collaboration with Humber Polytechnic (Canada), successfully convened a High-Level Stakeholder Consultation on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Policy and Governance in Nepal on January 16.

The consultation was organized as part of the regional programme on Strengthening Governance and Regional Cooperation, supported by the Indo-Pacific Engagement Initiative (IPEI) of the Government of Canada. The programme is being implemented across Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, India and Sri Lanka, with the objective of strengthening institutional capacity and advancing regional cooperation in AI governance, cybersecurity readiness, and responsible technology adoption.

The Nepal consultation brought together senior policymakers, government officials, educators, and key institutional and industry stakeholders for a focused dialogue on the opportunities and challenges associated with AI governance. Discussions centered on policy readiness, ethical and responsible AI use, and the role of public institutions in shaping future digital governance frameworks.

Deputy Ambassador Mark Allen said: “Canada has long recognized the potential of Artificial Intelligence to drive innovation, economic growth, and societal benefit. Through projects like these under our Indo-Pacific strategy, our leadership in AI extends beyond our national borders. I would like to reaffirm Canada’s strong commitment to Nepal as a trusted partner in supporting the building of resilient digital infrastructure and trusted governance frameworks, advancing safe, responsible, and innovative AI ecosystems.”

The consultation featured a keynote address by Mr. Adesh Khadka, Joint Secretary from the Ministry of Communications and IT who shared Nepal’s progress in the sector and opportunities.

Following the consultation, a 1.5-day intensive “AI in Government” capacity-building workshop was delivered by Humber Polytechnic, Canada. The workshop focused on practical applications of AI in public sector governance and policy implementation. Participants were also offered micro-credential certifications, supporting continued professional development and institutional capacity building in AI and digital governance.

Through this initiative, the Government of Canada reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Nepal and the wider Indo-Pacific region in fostering inclusive, secure, and forward-looking approaches to emerging technologies.
