EU Humanitarian Aid Officials Monitor Disaster Preparedness Projects in Western Nepal

Kathmandu: A team from the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO) Regional Office is currently in Nepal for a monitoring visit to review progress on initiatives supported by the European Union.

During the visit, the team travelled to project sites of the Strengthening Urban Preparedness, Earthquake Preparedness and Response in Western Region of Nepal (SUPER-II) initiative in Surkhet, Nepalgunj, and Dang. They interacted with community volunteers, municipal leaders, and provincial authorities to assess ongoing disaster preparedness efforts. The team also observed several activities introduced under the SUPER-II project that have since been expanded and replicated by neighbouring municipalities, demonstrating strong local ownership and sustainability.

The SUPER-II project is implemented by a UNDP-led consortium that includes UNICEF, UN Women, and Humanity & Inclusion, with financial support from the European Union through ECHO. The project aims to strengthen disaster preparedness systems in Nepal’s western region by improving early warning systems, training responders, and enhancing coordination mechanisms.

According to UNDP, these efforts contribute to building more resilient communities and ensuring that vulnerable groups are not left behind during emergencies.
