EU’s ECHO Team Monitors Disaster Preparedness Progress in Nepal’s Western Region

Kathmandu: A team from the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO) Regional Office is in Nepal for a monitoring visit to review progress across European Union–supported initiatives.

As part of the visit, the delegation observed activities under the Strengthening Urban Preparedness, Earthquake Preparedness and Response in Western Region of Nepal (SUPER-II) project in Surkhet, Nepalgunj, and Dang.

During their field visits, the team interacted with community volunteers, municipal officials, and provincial ministries. They also noted how disaster preparedness activities introduced by the SUPER-II project have been upscaled and replicated by neighboring municipalities, demonstrating strong local ownership and sustainability.

The SUPER-II project is implemented by a UNDP-led consortium, including UNICEF, UN Women, and Handicap International – Humanity & Inclusion, with support from the European Union through EU Civil Protection & Humanitarian Aid.

The project aims to strengthen disaster preparedness in Nepal’s western region through improved early warning systems, trained responders, and stronger coordination mechanisms.
