Kathmandu: FAO Nepal, alongside Mercy Corps and Aasaman Nepal, organized “Provincial Workshop on the Impacts of Super El Nino, Heatwaves, and Droughts in Madhesh Province” where key stakeholders gathered in Dhanusa, Janakpur. The event brought together provincial leaders, UN agencies, development partners, and local disaster management focal points to address the severe climate risks threatening local agriculture, food security, and livelihoods.
Discussions highlighted the urgent need to shift from reactive disaster relief toward proactive planning, early warning systems, climate-resilient farming, and efficient water management. Key government officials, including representatives from the Provincial Policy and Planning Commission and the Ministry of Forest and Environment, underscored their commitment to integrating heat action plans and climate risk strategies directly into local budgets and policies.
FAO stated that because Madhesh Province plays a vital role in national food production, investing in early action and multi-sectorial coordination, the day was essential to safeguarding community resilience and long-term food security across Nepal.
