French Embassy Celebrates Success of ‘Elephants in the Fog’
Kathmandu: The French Embassy in Nepal celebrated the win of “Elephants in the Fog” at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, where the film took the Un Certain Regard Jury Prize. The film was a co-production between Nepal, France, Germany, Brazil and Norway and was also supported by Institut Français (as part of La Fabrique).
French Ambassador to Nepal, Ms. Virginie Corteval, hosted a cocktail reception in honour of the film and its crew on 12 June 2026 at the Residence of the French Ambassador. On the occasion, Ambassador Corteval remarked: “This recognition at Cannes was a testament to Nepal’s extraordinary creative talent. Nepal has plenty of powerful stories to tell and I’m certain that we will get to see more of Nepali talent at the global platforms.”
The director of the film, Abinash Bikram Shah, expressed his gratitude to various supporters of the film as well as to the French regional funds. He said, “When you invest in a film like ours, it becomes more than just a production. You are protecting a voice. You are ensuring that stories that are so deeply local, stories about resilience and survival and of those on the margins are not erased by financial constraints.”
The event was attended by the film crew, the Acting Mayor of Kathmandu Ms. Sunita Dangol, media representatives, and personalities from the world of cinema.
