Government Establishes National AI Centre to Promote Digital Transformation

Kathmandu: The Government of Nepal has established a National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Centre to enhance efficiency in public and private sector services through digital technology. The Centre was set up under the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology.

Inaugurating the Centre, Minister for Communications and Information Technology Jagadish Kharel said the initiative marks a major step forward in Nepal’s AI development. “This is just the beginning. We already have an AI policy and an AI Council in place, and now the Centre will begin its operations,” he said.

Minister Kharel expressed confidence that the use of AI will support good governance, corruption control, employment generation, and innovation promotion, aligning with the goals of a “Digital Nepal” and “AI-driven transformation.”

He added that AI applications could help address human resource gaps in various sectors and improve the reliability and integrity of digital information.

Joint Secretary Adesh Khadka, Chief of the Ministry’s Information Technology Division, said the Centre was established in line with the AI Policy 2082. The National AI Centre will also facilitate private sector engagement and promote the development of AI-based programs and services in Nepal.
