ILO Launches National Training to Strengthen Public Employment Services in Nepal

Kathmandu: The International Labour Organization (ILO), in collaboration with the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security (MoLESS) and the International Training Centre of the ILO (ITC-ILO), has launched a national capacity-building training aimed at strengthening Public Employment Services (PES) in Nepal.

The first batch of the training, titled “Shaping and Managing Effective Public Employment Services in Nepal,” was held during the second week of February. The programme focuses on addressing key labour market challenges such as youth unemployment, informality, underemployment and skills mismatches.

Speaking at the opening session, ILO Country Director for Nepal Numan Özcan said the training aims to improve practical implementation and coordination among stakeholders. He emphasized the need for clear actions and policy-level changes to improve employment services.

Senior officials from federal, provincial and local governments, along with representatives from employers’ and workers’ organizations and labour market institutions, are participating in the training.

MoLESS Secretary Dr Dipak Kafle highlighted the importance of effective coordination in a context of growing labour migration. He said initiatives like this training support good governance and contribute to sustainable development, particularly in achieving employment goals under SDG 8.

The training is being conducted under the ILO’s Strengthening of Employment Service Centres in Nepal (SESC) project. By the end of the programme, participants are expected to enhance collaboration, strengthen stakeholder engagement, and explore digital and innovative approaches, including the use of artificial intelligence, to improve employment service delivery in Nepal.
