Ireland to Provide More Than €500,000 for Civil Society Organizations in Nepal

Kathmandu: The Irish Ambassador to Nepal, Kevin Kelly, announced more than €500,000 in Irish Government funding to support civil society organizations in Nepal. The fund is under Irish Aid’s Civil Society Fund, part of Ireland’s international development cooperation programme. Irish Aid is managed by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Dublin.

This funding is part of a broader announcement by Ireland’s Minister of State for International Development and Diaspora, Neale Richmond TD, who confirmed €7.9 million in grants for ten Irish NGOs to carry out development and human rights-focused projects around the world. Two of these organizations will deliver targeted programmes in Nepal.

Ambassador Kelly made the announcement at a press event held in Kathmandu, in the presence of the local partner organizations. The announcement took place during Ambassador Kelly’s visit to Nepal as part of a major EU diplomatic mission, involving 21 ambassadors and representatives from EU member states.

The EU delegation held high-level meetings with Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli, Foreign Minister Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba, as well as civil society actors and members of the business community.

Speaking in Kathmandu, Ambassador Kelly stated Ireland’s support for civil society in Nepal reflects our commitment to development that is inclusive, resilient and locally led. She said it also demonstrates the growing and positive relationship between Ireland and Nepal, and the tangible contributions this partnership is making to Nepalese society. Ambassador Kelly said, “This EU mission sends a strong and united message of support to Nepal. Our collective engagement reflects the EU’s commitment to Nepal’s development, democracy and prosperity.”
