Kathmandu: The handover ceremony for “The Project for the Rehabilitation of Irrigation System in the Eastern Terai Area,” supported by the Government of Japan, was held at the Chandra Nahar Irrigation Area in Saptari District of Madhesh Province. Shinto, Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of Japan in Nepal, attended the ceremony.

The project focused on rehabilitating the main canal facilities of the Chandra Nahar Irrigation System, one of Nepal’s oldest irrigation networks, originally constructed in 1927. Under this initiative, the Government of Japan provided a grant of 2.3 billion yen to Nepal to improve irrigation infrastructure and enhance agricultural productivity in the region.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Nepal. Agricultural assistance and cooperation in irrigation technology represent Japan’s longest-standing area of economic cooperation with Nepal. The Embassy of Japan expressed its pleasure that the completion of this major agricultural irrigation project coincides with this milestone year, and voiced its hope that the support will contribute to sustainable regional development and further strengthen the friendship between the people of Japan and Nepal.
