Japan Issues Postage Stamp Featuring Mount Everest to Mark Sister-City Ties with Nepal

Mayor of Fujinomiya Sudo expressed gratitude to Ambassador Dr. Subedi for proposing the idea of featuring Mount Everest on a Japanese postage stamp.

KATHMANDU: Dr. Durga Bahadur Subedi, Ambassador of Nepal to Japan, unveiled a Japanese postage stamp featuring the world’s highest peak, Mount Everest, at a special ceremony organized by the city of Fujinomiya in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, on June 9, 2025.

The postage stamp was issued by Japan Post at the initiative of Fujinomiya City as a gesture of goodwill following the sister-city relationship established with Mandan Deupur Municipality of Kavrepalanchok District, Nepal.

Addressing the special event in Fujinomiya, Ambassador Dr. Subedi stated that the issuance of a Japanese stamp featuring Mount Everest by Japan Post adds a new dimension to the longstanding cordial bilateral relations between Nepal and Japan and is expected to further deepen people-to-people ties. He expressed that having Nepal’s highest peak featured on a Japanese postage stamp is a matter of great pride and will also contribute significantly to the promotion of Nepal’s tourism.

In his welcome remarks, Mr. Hidetada Sudo, Mayor of Fujinomiya, expressed gratitude to Ambassador Dr. Subedi for proposing both the sister-city relationship with Mandandeupur and the idea of featuring Mount Everest on a Japanese postage stamp—both of which had now come to fruition.

Although Nepal has previously issued postage stamps depicting shared heritage with Japan, such as Mount Fuji alongside Mount Everest and Manaslu (1996), the first Japanese unit to visit Nepal, Kawaguchi (2002), the Nyatapola Temple in Bhaktapur and Japan’s Horyu-ji Buddhist Temple (2006), and again Mount Fuji with Mount Everest (2016), this marks the first time in 69 years that a Japanese postage stamp features a unique element of Nepal’s heritage.
