Kathmandu: Making history in Nepal’s political landscape, former Chief Justice Sushila Karki has become the country’s first female Prime Minister.

Following the protests led by Gen Z, Karki was appointed the chief of the interim government, whose primary responsibility is to hold the election in the country. She is the first woman in Nepal to hold the executive post, having earlier also served as the country’s first female Chief Justice.

President Ramchandra Paudel appointed Karki as Prime Minister in line with constitutional provisions. She took the oath of office and secrecy shortly after her appointment.

The Gen Z protests of September 8 and 9 resulted in the fall of the KP Sharma Oli-led government. With mediation from the Nepali Army, protest leaders, and various stakeholders, President Paudel appointed Karki on the fifth day of the demonstrations.
