Morang: Manmohan Technical University, located in Budhiganga Rural Municipality of Morang district, has announced plans to produce Ayurvedic medicines, with an initial focus on treatments for diabetes using medicinal herbs found in Nepal.
At a press conference held on June 23, Vice Chancellor Dr. Subashshree Pokharel shared that the university is currently conducting research on Ayurvedic approaches to diabetes treatment. “We are studying the effectiveness of locally sourced medicinal herbs in managing diabetes,” he said.
In the current academic session, the university is undertaking research on ten different topics, with diabetes treatment and bacteriophage research being given top priority. Other research projects are also centered around Ayurvedic healthcare innovations.
Dr. Pokharel also outlined the university’s broader academic goals, including a plan to introduce skill-based tests for students from Grade 6 to 8, following assessments for students up to Grade 5. The university currently has 322 students enrolled in bachelor’s and master’s programs across various technical fields.
Established in 2076 BS by the Koshi Province government, Manmohan Technical University is the first of its kind in the province. However, Dr. Pokharel expressed concern over the limited budget allocated to the institution. Despite requesting Rs 370 million for the upcoming fiscal year, the university was granted only Rs 140 million, just 0.5% of the province’s total budget. “This level of funding is concerning for a technical institution striving to lead in innovation and skill development,” he added.
