NEA to Invest Rs 3 Billion in Cross-Border Transmission Lines

Kathmandu: The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) is set to invest Rs 3 billion in a joint venture (JV) for the development of two cross-border transmission lines.

According to the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, the JV will be formed with India’s Power Grid Corporation, with both sides contributing equity investment. Of the total investment, Rs 1 billion will be allocated to the JV to be established in Nepal and Rs 2 billion to the JV in India. The NEA will fund its share from its internal resources.

As agreed by officials of both countries, the joint ventures will oversee the construction of the Inaruwa–Purniya and Dodhara–Bareli cross-border transmission lines. These key infrastructures, aimed at enhancing energy exchange between Nepal and India, are expected to be completed by 2030.

The JV to be established in Nepal will have 51 percent shareholding from the NEA and 49 percent from India’s Power Grid Corporation.
