Kathmandu: The Embassy of Nepal, New Delhi, and I-PROBONO (INDIA) LEGAL SERVICES signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on August 14 to facilitate access to legal and allied support for Nepali children in India.
The MoU establishes a framework for cooperation concerning Nepali children who come into contact with the child protection or criminal justice systems, including child victims of abuse and exploitation, children alleged to be in conflict with law, and children involved in cross-border protection and family matters.
Under the arrangement, iProbono India will provide pro bono legal assistance and representation to Nepali children in Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Lucknow. Assistance in other locations may also be considered on a case-by-case basis.
The areas of cooperation include coordination with Child Welfare Committees, police, Child Care Institutions and other competent authorities concerning care, protection, rehabilitation, victim compensation and other legal entitlements. The MoU also provides for cooperation on cross-border child protection and family matters, as well as legal-awareness and capacity-building programmes for Nepali organizations and stakeholders.
