Nepal, Germany Launch $100M Lekhnath–Damauli Power Transmission Project

Kathmandu: The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), in collaboration with the Embassy of Germany in Nepal, GIZ Nepal, and KfW Development Bank, has marked the groundbreaking of the Lekhnath–Damauli 220 kV Transmission Line Project.

The project, valued at EUR 100 million, is jointly financed by Nepal and Germany, with Germany contributing around EUR 50 million as a grant.

The initiative will construct a 45-kilometre double-circuit 220 kV transmission line along with modern gas-insulated substations in Lekhnath and Damauli. With a transmission capacity of around 1,000 MW, the project aims to improve the efficient and reliable distribution of clean hydropower.

Officials said the project will help ensure more reliable electricity supply for households, schools, hospitals and businesses, while supporting economic growth and reducing power outages.

The project is also expected to promote efficient land use and environmentally friendly infrastructure, contributing to Nepal’s long-term goal of building a sustainable and climate-resilient energy system.
