Kathmandu: Nepal is planning to close five diplomatic missions abroad amid economic pressures, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. They include embassies in Brazil, Denmark, and South Africa, as well as consulates general in San Francisco and Chengdu.
Spokesperson Lok Bahadur Paudel announced the government’s decision during a regular press briefing on August 7. He reassured that the closures will only take full effect once reliable alternative arrangements are in place to prevent service disruptions for Nepali citizens and international clients.
He emphasized that downsizing or expanding missions reflects short-term management and that diplomatic presence will naturally expand again as the country’s economic capacity grows.
