Nepal Rescues 37 Citizens Trafficked to Myanmar for Online Scams

Kathmandu: The Embassy of Nepal in Thailand, in coordination with Thai authorities, has rescued 37 Nepali citizens who had been taken to Myanmar and illegally employed in online scamming operations. These activities included online dating fraud, online casinos, gaming and phishing schemes, and crypto-related scams.

The victims fled to Thailand after Myanmar security forces raided the scamming center on 19 October 2025. They were repatriated to Nepal November 19 on Nepal Airlines flight RA402.

Efforts are also underway to bring back 23 Nepalis stranded in Myawaddy, Myanmar; two in Mysore, Thailand; and four in Cambodia at the earliest, through coordination with the relevant authorities in Myanmar, Cambodia, and Thailand.

The Embassy urged all Nepali citizens to go abroad for employment only through official channels and with a valid work permit, as required by the Government of Nepal. It warned against falling prey to fraudulent promises of jobs in countries such as Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Thailand. The Embassy also requested the media and civil society to help spread this message widely.
