Kathmandu: Nepal is set to host its first national conference on invasive species in the third week of December, aimed at reviewing the diversity, distribution, impacts, and policy status related to invasive species across the country.
The conference, scheduled for December 12–13 in Kathmandu, is expected to raise awareness among government agencies, experts, and other stakeholders about global and national challenges posed by invasive species. The event is being organised by the Forest Research and Training Centre under the Ministry of Forests and Environment, with the theme “Building Consensus for the Control of Invasive Species.”
Officials said the conference will support the implementation of the National Invasive Species Management Strategy and Action Plan.
Dr. Rajendra KC, Director General of the Centre, said invasive species are emerging as a growing challenge in Nepal as climate change and human activities reshape ecosystems. Current records show 29 types of invasive plant species spreading across the country. These plants compete with native vegetation, block sunlight, and thrive even in harsh environmental conditions.
