Kathmandu: The Department of Immigration has announced that the registration and tracking of foreign tourists will soon be carried out through an electronic system.
Director General Ramchandra Tiwari said the system has been developed to enhance the safety of foreign nationals, improve access to information, curb potential crimes, and promote tourism in Nepal. The new mechanism will also simplify record management of visitors’ stays and activities under tourist visas.
The Department has published the registration process and user manual on its website and requested concerned individuals and institutions to contact its IT branch for further information. District Monitoring Committees in all 77 districts have been instructed to oversee the system’s implementation.
The system will first be made mandatory in five-star hotels within the Kathmandu Valley starting September 17. In the second phase, beginning November 17, it will be extended to all star hotels, airlines, tour and travel companies, and money exchange providers.
The Department has urged public institutions and private service providers catering to foreign nationals to join the system. Recently, officials held discussions with the Hotel Association of Nepal (HAN), which said it would soon issue an official response to the initiative.
