Nepali Students Spend Rs 138 Billion for Abroad Studies

Kathmandu: Despite the growing number of universities and colleges within the country, Nepali students continue to spend a substantial amount of money on pursuing higher education abroad.

According to the Current Macroeconomic and Financial Situation of Nepal report released by Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) on Sunday, travel payments from Nepal rose by 18.1 percent to Rs 223.72 billion in the fiscal year 2024/25. Of this, Rs 138.48 billion was spent solely on education-related expenses. In comparison, the figures stood at Rs 189.43 billion and Rs 125.13 billion, respectively, in the previous fiscal year.

The NRB report further revealed that Nepal’s net services income remained at a deficit of Rs 90.94 billion in 2024/25, widening from a deficit of Rs 55.86 billion a year earlier. Under the service account, travel income increased by 7.7 percent, reaching Rs 88.66 billion, up from Rs 82.33 billion in the previous year.
