Nine Embassies Issue Joint Statement on Violence in Nepal, Urge Restraint and Protection of Rights

“ We are deeply saddened by the violence seen in Kathmandu and elsewhere in Nepal today, including the tragic loss of life and injury during demonstrations.”

Kathmandu: The Embassies of Australia, Finland, France, Japan, the Republic of Korea, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Germany, and Norway in Nepal have issued a joint statement expressing deep concern over the violence that erupted in Kathmandu and other parts of the country during recent Gen-Z demonstrations over corruption and a controversial government ban on social media platforms.

“We are deeply saddened by the violence seen in Kathmandu and elsewhere in Nepal today, including the tragic loss of life and injury during demonstrations. We extend our sincere condolences to the families of the victims, all those affected, and wish those injured a swift and full recovery,” the joint statement read.

The nine diplomatic missions reaffirmed their governments’ strong support for the universal rights of peaceful assembly and freedom of expression, calling on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and avoid further escalation.

“Our governments reaffirm our strong support for the universal rights of peaceful assembly and freedom of expression. We urge all parties to exercise maximum restraint, avoid further escalation, and ensure that these fundamental rights are protected,” the statement added.

The statement comes amid ongoing demonstrations in Nepal, with foreign missions emphasizing the importance of safeguarding democratic freedoms and addressing grievances through peaceful means.
