Kathmandu: U.S. Embassy’s Deputy Chief of Mission Scott Urbom joined U.S. Government exchange program alumni and Nepali alumni of U.S. universities for a gathering in solidarity with families and communities affected by Nepal’s devastating floods on September 28.
In the wake of the disaster, U.S. exchange alumni have turned their networks into action. Through the Nepal-U.S. Alumni Network (NUSAN), alumni have mobilized relief supplies, supported blood donation efforts, and reached affected communities across Nepal.
“From day one, the United States has worked alongside our Nepali partners to mobilize assistance for those affected by this disaster. That partnership is reflected not only in U.S. Government support, but also in the extraordinary response of our exchange alumni, who have stepped forward to serve their communities when they are needed most. As Nepal moves from response toward recovery, we will continue working together to support those affected,” DCM Urbom said.
The State Department has provided more than $36 million in humanitarian, health, and forensic assistance, including emergency food and logistics support, DNA and forensic assistance, and disaster-response supplies and equipment.
The evening also featured the premiere of a special tribute song by American country artist and State Department Musical Envoy Jessica Lynn and renowned Nepali sarangi musician and U.S. exchange alumnus Kiran Nepali, bringing American and Nepali voices together to remember those lost, honor those still awaiting answers, and express the friendship and compassion connecting our two countries.
