Kathmandu: People in Need (PIN) Nepal has completed a five-day “Training on Forecasting and Early Warning” for 35 officials from the Meteorological Forecasting Division and regional offices of the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM) on November 21.
The programme ran from 17–21 November and wrapped up on November 21. It was conducted under the British Embassy in Nepal, funded by the RAIN Programme, and delivered in collaboration with the UK’s Met Office.
Over the course of the training, participants strengthened their ability to interpret satellite imagery, radar data, weather models, and radiosonde readings. They also explored ways to enhance communication and decision-making by integrating local knowledge.

Key outcomes included improved technical understanding of weather forecasting, enabling officials to produce more reliable early warnings. Regional DHM staff also strengthened their decision-making skills, supporting more effective early action at the local level.
Participants interacted with Disaster Risk Reduction focal persons from various municipalities to better understand community needs. Through hands-on activities and group work, they practiced converting technical forecasting terminology into clear, simple, and inclusive warnings aimed at protecting vulnerable populations.
