Kathmandu: On the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit 2025, Prime Minister of Nepal K.P. Sharma Oli held a bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Tianjin, China, on August 30.
According to the Embassy of Nepal in Beijing, the two leaders discussed various aspects of Nepal-China relations and expressed their commitment to advancing mutually beneficial cooperation in the days ahead.
Prime Minister Oli expressed gratitude for China’s continuous support in Nepal’s development endeavors. He stated that Nepal-China ties, rooted in the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, have remained trouble-free. Prime Minister Oli is participating in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit 2025. During the meeting, he also requested President Xi’s support for Nepal’s aspiration to become a full member of the SCO. At present, Nepal holds the status of a dialogue partner of the organization.
Expressing hope for the accelerated implementation of already agreed projects, including under the BRI framework, Prime Minister Oli sought China’s support in areas such as fertilizer supply, petroleum exploration, human resource development, climate resilience, and people-to-people connectivity. Referring to the recent understanding reached between India and China on border trade through the Lipu Lekh Pass, Prime Minister Oli reiterated that the territory belongs to Nepal and underscored that the Government of Nepal has registered its strong objection to the agreement.
President Xi Jinping expressed China’s readiness to support Nepal in fulfilling its aspiration of “Prosperous Nepal, Happy Nepali.” He also stated that China would continue to cooperate with Nepal in multilateral forums, including the UN and the SCO.
Furthermore, President Xi thanked Nepal for its firm adherence to the One-China Policy and reiterated China’s commitment to supporting Nepal’s development, including through the implementation of high-quality Belt and Road Initiative projects already agreed upon between the two countries.
