Prime Minister Karki Addresses UN Human Rights Council High-Level Segment in Geneva

Kathmandu: Prime Minister Sushila Karki addressed the High-Level Segment of the 61st regular session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva on February 23 through a video statement.

In her address, Prime Minister Karki reaffirmed Nepal’s unwavering commitment to advancing human rights through strengthened policy, legal, and institutional measures. She highlighted constitutional provisions safeguarding fundamental rights and reiterated the government’s dedication to protecting and promoting all human rights and freedoms.

Emphasizing Nepal’s adherence to the principles of the United Nations Charter, the Prime Minister underscored the government’s resolve to conclude the transitional justice process in a transparent, inclusive, credible, and victim-centric manner.

Recalling the September 2025 Gen-Z movement in Nepal, she stated that the mandate of the current government is to ensure accountability, combat corruption, and deliver good governance. She also highlighted preparations underway to hold elections to the House of Representatives on 5 March 2026 in a free and fair manner.

The High-Level Segment is being attended by Presidents, Prime Ministers, Foreign Ministers, and dignitaries from over 120 countries. Among those addressing the opening plenary were President of the General Assembly Annalena Baerbock, UN Secretary-General António Guterres, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk, and Swiss Federal Vice President and Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs Ignazio Cassis. The session was formally convened by the President of the Human Rights Council, Sidharto Reza Suryodipuro.

The Nepali delegation, led by Prime Minister Karki, includes Ram Prasad Subedi, Permanent Representative of Nepal in Geneva, along with senior officials from the Permanent Mission of Nepal to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva. The 61st session of the Human Rights Council is scheduled to conclude on March 31 2026 in Geneva.
