Prime Minister Oli Concludes Five-Day China Visit

PM's official visit aimed to elevate Nepal's role in the SCO and enhance bilateral ties.

Kathmandu: Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli has returned home after a five-day visit to China, where he led a Nepali delegation to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Tianjin. The visit, which took place from August 30 to September 3, 2025, was at the friendly invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The primary objective of the visit was to attend the SCO Summit and promote Nepal’s national interests by elevating its level of participation in the organization.

According to a press release issued by the MoFA of Nepal, during his trip, Prime Minister Oli held several high-level meetings and participated in key events.

On August 30, he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Tianjin. The two leaders engaged in a candid and cordial discussion on bilateral relations, cooperation, and priorities. PM Oli thanked China for its continuous support in Nepal’s development, noting that the relationship is based on the five principles of peaceful coexistence. He requested China’s support for Nepal’s full membership in the SCO and expressed hope for the swift implementation of various projects under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). PM Oli also raised an objection to the recent agreement between China and India on border trade through the Lipulekh pass and requested its non-implementation.

In response, President Xi Jinping reaffirmed China’s commitment to supporting Nepal in achieving its national aspiration of “Prosperous Nepal, Happy Nepali.” He also reiterated China’s continued cooperation with Nepal on multilateral platforms, including the United Nations and the SCO, and thanked Nepal for its firm commitment to the One-China principle.

On September 1, PM Oli addressed the SCO Plus Summit in Tianjin. He shared his views on strengthening multilateralism, promoting regional cooperation, and achieving sustainable development. The Prime Minister stated that Nepal’s aspiration is not just to be a dialogue partner but a full member of the SCO.

Furthermore, on the sidelines of the summit, Prime Minister Oli held separate bilateral meetings with several world leaders:

  • Russian President Vladimir Putin: The leaders discussed strengthening Nepal-Russia relations and promoting mutually beneficial cooperation in trade, investment, education, culture, and air connectivity. PM Oli also extended an invitation to President Putin to visit Nepal.
  • Lao President Dr. Thongloun Sisoulith: The meeting focused on enhancing cooperation in culture, agriculture, and people-to-people relations. Both sides also agreed to collaborate on international forums to promote the interests of Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs) and Least Developed Countries (LDCs).
  • Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu: Discussions revolved around increasing cooperation in agriculture, tourism, education, and people-to-people ties. The leaders also emphasized the need for collaboration to address the severe challenges of climate change, particularly for mountain and island nations.
  • Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh: The leaders discussed strengthening Nepal-Vietnam relations and expanding cooperation in trade, investment, science and technology, innovation, digitalization, climate change, sports, education, culture, and air connectivity.
  • Cambodian Prime Minister Dr. Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet: The meeting focused on promoting trade, investment, tourism, and cultural cooperation. Both sides also agreed to collaborate on various international platforms, including the United Nations.

Moreover, after the SCO Summit, PM Oli traveled to Beijing, where he met with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng on September 2. The two leaders discussed various aspects of Nepal-China relations, after which the Vice President hosted a dinner in PM Oli’s honor.

On September 3, the Prime Minister participated in the “80th Anniversary of the Victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and World Anti-Fascist War” ceremony hosted by the Chinese government.

The Prime Minister’s delegation included his spouse, Radhika Shakya; former Deputy Prime Minister and Member of Parliament Purna Bahadur Khadka; Minister for Education, Science, and Technology Raghuji Pant; Minister for Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation Badri Prasad Pandey; and other high-ranking government officials.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed gratitude to the government and people of China for their warm hospitality and thanked all media personnel for their role in keeping the public informed throughout the visit.
