Room to Read Inaugurates 48 School Libraries in Kapilvastu on 18th National Library Day

Kathmandu: On the occasion of the 18th National Library Day, Room to Read has inaugurated libraries in 48 schools across three rural municipalities of Kapilvastu district. Of the newly established libraries, 33 are already operational, while 15 more are being planned in collaboration with the respective municipalities.

According to the press release, the initiative aligns with this year’s nationwide theme, “Our Library: Our Future,” announced by the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology. Through these libraries, Room to Read aims to promote quality education and literacy, particularly by nurturing a culture of reading among children.

Moreover, the initiative aims to strengthen the culture of reading among children by providing access to child-friendly learning spaces, a variety of books, and resources that encourage lifelong learning. And so, the newly established libraries are expected to benefit thousands of students, particularly those from low-income communities, by fostering reading habits and enhancing literacy outcomes.

“Libraries are more than just spaces to access books—they are foundations for curiosity, creativity, and opportunity,” said Pushkar Lal Shrestha, Country Director of Room to Read Nepal. “By working closely with governments, schools, and communities, we continue to ensure that every child has the chance to learn, read, and thrive.”

Since its establishment in Nepal in 2000, Room to Read has set up 4,959 school libraries across 31 districts, distributed over 14.8 million quality reading materials, and supported the creation of child-friendly environments that encourage reading and learning.
