Second Economic Census to be Conducted from Mid-March

Kathmandu: The government has announced that the second Economic Census, 2025 will be conducted from March 15 to July 16 to capture a comprehensive picture of the national economy.

The National Statistics Office (NSO) shared the census schedule, logo and theme at a programme held in Kathmandu. The census will be carried out under the theme “Economic Census for Measuring Economy.”

Speaking at the programme, NSO Spokesperson and Deputy Chief Statistics Officer Dhundiraj Lamichhane said the census would generate basic and reliable economic statistics essential for formulating policies, plans and development strategies. He added that detailed findings of the census would be released gradually starting from the fiscal year 2026/27.

According to Lamichhane, the census aims to collect data on the number, type, investment, employment, production and service flow of industries, trade, businesses, services, cooperatives, and private and public institutions.

Chief Statistics Officer Dr Kamal Prasad Pokharel said the economic census would help strengthen the institutional foundation of economic statistics in the country. He noted that the data would support both short-term and long-term economic planning, investment promotion and employment generation.

The census will also help strengthen gross domestic product (GDP) estimates, revise the base year of national accounts, assess government targets and support policy formulation.

Nepal conducted its first Economic Census seven years ago, during which 923,356 business institutions were recorded nationwide, employing about 3.228 million people. The census showed that around 30 per cent of business firms had women managers, while formal and informal institutions were almost equal in number.

Economic activities for the census are classified into 21 sectors based on international industrial standards, with basic information to be collected from 18 of them.
