‘Spain Visit Underscored Development Partnership Priorities’ – PM Oli

PM Oli briefs Parliament on Nepal’s participation in UN Development Financing Conference.

Kathmandu: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has briefed the House of Representatives on Nepal’s participation and achievements at the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development, organized by the United Nations in Seville, Spain.

Addressing Parliament, Prime Minister Oli stated that the conference significantly contributed to expanding Nepal’s global partnerships in economic diplomacy and advancing efforts toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He had previously informed the House on June 28 about the objectives of his visit, which spanned from June 28 to July 4.

Leading the delegation on behalf of the Least Developed Countries (LDCs), Prime Minister Oli advocated for equitable economic and social development for these nations. He emphasized that the implementation of the Seville commitments is expected to generate global support for the upliftment of LDCs, including Nepal, which aims to graduate to a developing country status by 2026.

Prime Minister Oli highlighted that the visit not only enhanced Nepal’s diplomatic ties with various countries and the United Nations but also provided a platform to voice the concerns of LDCs on development finance, official and unofficial development aid, and climate finance. He asserted that Nepal had proven itself as a responsible and capable member of the international community.

“Nepal has worked to amplify its development priorities and strengthen economic diplomacy,” PM Oli said, adding that the visit is expected to help attract greater foreign investment.

He also shared details of his participation in various roundtable discussions, siloed talks, and a meeting of the Group of Least Developed Countries, where he played a key leadership role. Prime Minister Oli stated that among the 44 LDCs, Nepal demonstrated its capacity to lead and represent the group effectively.

“There has been a call for increased support in development finance, alongside formal and informal development assistance, as well as climate finance,” Prime Minister Oli said, adding, “We have worked to highlight the priorities of development partnerships. Nepal has demonstrated itself as a responsible and capable member of the international community, and it is expected that these efforts will further advance economic diplomacy and attract greater foreign investment.”

On the eve of the conference, Oli addressed a gathering of civil society representatives, calling for a vigilant and active role from civil society in development efforts. He reaffirmed Nepal’s commitment to a democratic and liberal system that supports civil society participation.

During the conference, Prime Minister Oli also held a bilateral meeting with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, further strengthening diplomatic relations between the two nations.
