Surveillance Stepped Up at Western Nepal–India Border to Prevent Nipah Virus Spread

Dodhara Chandani: Health authorities have increased surveillance at western border checkpoints with India to prevent the possible spread of the Nipah virus, following its detection in neighboring India.

Vector Control Inspector at the Sudurpaschim Health Directorate, Hemraj Joshi, said monitoring has been intensified at five border points in Sudurpaschim Province. Health desks are operating at Gauriphanta and Khakaruna in Kailali, Khalanga in Darchula, Jhulgahat in Baitadi, and Gaddachauki in Kanchanpur.

“Precautionary measures have been adopted at all health desks, and staff have been oriented about the Nipah virus,” Joshi said, adding that isolation wards established during the COVID-19 period have been kept ready.

Health officials noted that although Nipah virus cases have been reported in West Bengal, India, the risk is considered higher at Nepal’s eastern borders. However, preparedness measures have also been strengthened in the west.

Dipendra Singh Rawal, head of the District Health Office, said health desk personnel are closely monitoring travelers showing symptoms of infection. “Passengers entering Nepal with fever are being screened. Swab samples from suspected cases are collected and sent to the Provincial Public Health Laboratory,” he said.

He added that preventive measures have been implemented with special focus, as the Nipah virus can spread through bats, pigs, and infected individuals.
