Sushila Karki Assumes Office as Nepal’s Interim Prime Minister

Kathmandu: Newly appointed Prime Minister Sushila Karki formally took office on Sunday at a program held at Singha Durbar. The ceremony was organized at the new building of the Ministry of Home Affairs, which now houses the Prime Minister’s Office after the previous building was set on fire during the Gen-Z movement.

Before assuming office, Prime Minister Karki visited the Martyrs’ Memorial in Lainchor and garlanded the statue of the martyrs. Following recommendations from Gen-Z representatives, President Ram Chandra Poudel appointed former Chief Justice Karki as Prime Minister in accordance with Article 61 of the Constitution.

Her primary responsibility as head of the interim government is to conduct elections in the country. Karki is the first woman in Nepal to hold the executive post, having previously served as the country’s first female Chief Justice.

Immediately after assuming office, Prime Minister Karki announced that those who died during the Gen-Z movement would be declared martyrs, and that each family of the deceased would receive Rs 1 million in compensation.

Prime Minister Karki is preparing to form a small-sized cabinet. On Saturday, she visited several hospitals to meet those injured during the Gen-Z protests.
