Kathmandu: The Solid Waste Management Association of Nepal (SWMAN), with support from the International Labour Organization (ILO) Nepal’s Promoting Rights and Social Inclusion through Organization and Formalization (PRS) – Phase II Project, hosted a validation workshop on October 16.
The workshop was organized to review and endorse two milestone documents, Guidelines to Promote Decent Work and Formalization and Standard Operating Procedures for Waste Management.
The workshop brought together representatives from the federal government, including the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security; Ministry of Urban Development; Ministry of Forestry and Environment; Ministry of Women, Children and Senior Citizens; National Planning Commission; and Department of Labour and Occupational Safety, along with representatives from six municipalities, trade unions, civil society organizations, and development partners.
Stakeholders described the documents as crucial tools to bridge existing gaps and strengthen efforts toward formalized and safer waste management practices. Government representatives welcomed the initiative, noting its alignment with Nepal’s national goal of promoting formalization.
Furthermore, trade union partners hailed the workshop as a historic step, commending employers for taking the lead in safeguarding workers’ rights and promoting decent work. The event concluded with valuable feedback and recommendations, which will be incorporated before the final endorsement of the two documents.
