Kanchanpur: The counting of tigers in Shuklaphanta National Park began on Tuesday. This is the fifth tiger census being conducted in the park and its surrounding areas.
According to conservation officer Purushottam Wagle, the big cats will be counted using the camera trapping method. Tiger surveys are conducted every four years.
For the census, 520 automated cameras have been installed along tiger trails in the park and nearby areas. A 77-member technical team has been mobilized for the task.
Officials said elephants will also be used to assist the counting process, while teams will operate from 11 different camps during the survey.
The previous survey conducted in 2022 recorded 36 tigers in the park, which covers an area of 305 square kilometres. Authorities expect the tiger population to have increased since then.
