Kathmandu: Manjeet Dhakal, an adviser to the LDC Group and Nepal in global climate negotiations, recently addressed the Joint Trade Union Coordination Centre to discuss the outcomes of COP30, Nepal’s climate commitments and the importance of a just transition for workers.
Dhakal highlighted that Nepal is already moving toward cleaner energy through increased hydropower generation, electric vehicles, clean cooking solutions and other renewable initiatives. He emphasized that the key challenge is ensuring this transition is fair, especially given Nepal’s largely informal workforce.
He said that trade unions have an important role in making sure no worker or community is left behind. A just transition, he said, aims to protect jobs, rights and livelihoods while supporting global efforts to limit warming to 1.5°C.
