UN ECOSOC President Thapa Highlights Global Priorities at 80th UNGA Second Committee Debate

Kathmandu: The President of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), Lok Bahadur Thapa, addressed the 80th Session of the UN General Assembly’s Second Committee General Debate on October 6.

In his address, President Thapa emphasized the urgent need to accelerate the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Doha Programme of Action (DPoA), a time-bound roadmap focusing on climate justice, international financial architecture (IFA) reform, sustainable graduation support, and effective multilateralism to help Least Developed Countries (LDCs) achieve sustainable progress.

“As the world faces a converging economic and geopolitical crisis, LDCs remain at the forefront of vulnerability. Climate shocks, conflicts, pandemics, and debt distress continue to erode development gains in LDCs. Extreme Poverty is intensifying, development assistance is shrinking, FDI is declining, the digital divide is widening — in many LDCs, GDP growth remains far below the 7 per cent SDG target, undermining our aspirations and the promise of the 2030 agenda,” stated President Thapa.
